Export demand for apples down in Ukraine

According to Fruit-Inform, exporters' demand for Ukrainian apples has significantly gone down week-on-week. Now apples are shipped mainly to local middlemen and processors, while exporters have considerably reduced their purchase volumes.

Such a situation is observed due to too high prices quoted by Ukrainian farms. Until now, middlemen involved into fruit and vegetable shipments to Russia through Crimea were relatively satisfied with prices of Ukrainian apples; therefore, their stable demand was the main factor to maintain price stability in the Ukrainian apple market. However, Ukrainian apples have recently become uncompetitive in quality to price ratio in Russia.

According to Fruit-Inform price monitoring, current prices fixed by growers from Krasnodar Krai vary between RUB 27-35/kg (USD 0.45-0.58/kg), depending on variety and fruit size. Ukrainian farms offer export-quality apples averagely at UAH 9-10/kg (USD 0.43-0.47/kg). Taking into account customs clearance and logistics costs, Ukrainian apples arrive in the Russian market at USD 0.61-0.65/kg, almost 20% higher compared with prices fixed by local growers.

At the same time, Fruit-Inform analysts say that Ukrainian apple exports have usually just gathering pace in August with shipments peaking in September-October.

More detailed information about the Ukrainian apple market developments will be presented at the 5th International Conference «Apple Business of Ukraine-2015», which is going to take place on August 13-14, Kleopatra Hotel, Kamyanets-Podilskyi, Ukraine.
