Apple production up in Turkey

Turkish apple production is expected to go up by 20% year-on-year, according to WAPA.

Apple production will total 2.541 mln tons in 2015 against just 2.1 mln tons a year before, the lowest result over the past 10 years.

Only 5% of those volumes are expected to be shipped for export: about 190,000 tons, an increase of 48% year-on-year. We would remind you that exports totaled just 128,000 tons in the season 2014/15 with Iraq, Syria, Egypt and Russia as the main consumers.

Other harvested volumes will be utilized either in the fresh internal market or for processing. It should be noted that apples remain one of the most popular fruits in Turkey. According to the official data, annual per capita consumption of apples averages 30 kg in Turkey against about 20.6 kg in Europe.
