Ukraine: consumers' New Year fruit and vegetable basket cost up 60% year-on-year
According to Fruit-Inform, the cost of Ukrainian consumers' New Year fruit and vegetable basket will be 60% higher year-on-year.
Taking into account a decrease in household income, this fact means a significant fall in fruit and vegetable sales during current holidays.
A rise of 55% in prices of greenhouse vegetables made the largest contribution (about a half) to an increase in the cost of New Year fruit and vegetable basket.
The sharpest growth in prices was registered in the segment of traditional vegetables (white cabbage, onions, table beets, carrots): up 4.1 times year-on-year. However, their share in consumers' basket is smaller; therefore, they will contribute about 20% to an increase in the cost of New Year fruit and vegetable basket.
Potato prices doubled year-on-year and made the contribution of 11% to the growth in the basket cost. Fruits became 32.8% more expensive and contributed 21% to an increase in consumers' spendings on fruits and vegetables during New Year holidays.
It should also be noted that all main fruit and vegetable categories are higher year-on-year: the lowest increase in prices is registered in the mandarin segment (up by 8.7%), while the highest one is fixed in the segments of white cabbage and carrots (up 3.7 times).
