Ukraine: white cabbage prices in Lviv 11 times as high as a year before
Prices of early white cabbage have been growing rapidly at Ukrainian wholesale markets. As a result, prices fixed by sellers from Shuvar Wholesale Market are already 11 times as high as registered in the same period of the previous season, according to Fruit-Inform.
They are now ready to ship early produce at UAH 10-12/kg (EUR 0.34-0.41/kg), an increase of 40% week-on-week. We would remind you that prices stood just at UAH 0.80/kg and higher there a year ago.
White cabbage prices also went up by a third week-on-week at Nezhdanna Wholesale Market, Kherson Oblast. Now they vary between UAH 10-12/kg (EUR 0.34-0.41/kg), 7.8 times as high as in the same period of the previous season.
The sharpest week-on-week rise in prices is not registered in Kiev: sellers from Stolychny Wholesale Market offer their early white cabbage at UAH 10-11/kg (EUR 0.34-0.37/kg), a rise of 60% week-on-week and 4-5 times as high as a year before.
The market analysts connect such a rapid increase in prices with an inter-season period in Ukraine. The majority of Ukrainian farms have already finished their campaign of early varieties, while harvesting rates of later ones are not high. Meanwhile, such a high year-on-year difference in prices is registered due to later start of the season due to cold spring this year. However, the market experts consider the price growth temporary and expect prices to start going down soon in the Ukrainian market.
