Tomato prices reach record high in Ukraine
Tomato prices have been rapidly growing in Ukraine and already reached their record high, according to Fruit-Inform.
Now greenhouse growers sell their tomatoes at UAH 24-28/kg (EUR 0.77-0.90/kg), an increase of 60% since the beginning of this week.
The sector experts connect a rapid rise in prices with shortage of supply of tomatoes in the market, as the majority of farmers have already finished their season. Moreover, traders are still unable to compensate shortage of supply by imports: shipments from Turkey remain irregular, and prices of Turkish tomatoes reach UAH 38/kg (EUR 1.22/kg).
As a result, current prices of Ukrainian tomatoes are 35% higher compared with the second half of November 2016. Moreover, the market participants expect prices to continue to grow in the nearest time, as the supply of domestic tomatoes has been rapidly decreasing.
