The last eleven days of August proved optimal for winter crops sowing

In the period of August 21-31, 2004 almost all over the territory of Ukraine the amount of soil moisture - 15 to 30 mm - was optimal for winter crops sowing. Only in Sumy and Odessa Regions there were not more that 4 to 10 mm of productive moisture in the soil, Ukraine's weather centre has informed.

The weather centre experts said that such stocks of soil moisture allowed finishing the sowing works almost all over the territory of Ukraine in optimal terms.

Winter crop sowing has been started in eastern regions of Ukraine only. On the rest of the territory the preparations to planting are underway.

As it has been informed, as of September 2 winter crops were sown on 283,000 hectares, including 249,100 hectares of winter grains.

Winter wheat is sown on 202,400 hectares, rye - on 42,500 hectares, barley - 300 hectares.

Preparatory works for winter crops sowing have been completed on 87 percent of areas (7.058 million hectares).
