Bulb onion from Poland prevails on Lviv market

According to information provided by Lviv office specialists of Agricultural Marketing Project, the onion imported from Poland is sold mostly on the local markets. The retail price for Polish onion is about USD $ 0.28/kg.

This situation is quite illogical, taking into consideration the fact that the onion overproduction is very serious on Ukrainian interior market. However, it looks like Polish producers compete the Ukrainians both on price and quality of the commodity. According to the market players' information, Polish onion can be bought from the farmers on USD $ 0.06-0.08/kg, and this commodity is sold on the wholesale markets of Western Ukraine on about USD $ 0.16/kg.

The farmers of Lviv oblast are constantly complaining that contraband supplies of onion as well as other fruits and vegetables cause great losses in their business. At the same time, there is a logical question: why, having lower labor costs, land and fuel and lubricant prices, and the same climatic conditions as in Poland, Ukrainian farmers are unable to grow the competitive commodity?
