There is a new record on cabbage price!
An interesting situation is observed on the Ukrainian market of fresh white cabbage. The dramatic price growth of the previous weeks was followed by the price decrease observed past week in some regions; it was the consequence of the better weather conditions and larger cabbage supplies on market.
However, the trend of the wholesale and retail price decrease was not countrywide. According to the assessments of Agricultural Marketing Project, past week the prices on white cabbage went down in the central regions of the country and other oblasts where the cabbage production is traditionally high; but the prices continued growing in the South.
We should also mention that the retail cabbage prices in the southern oblasts reached the absolute record for the previous years having exceeded the mark of USD $ 0.56/kg (in some cases the high-quality cabbage was sold even on USD $ 0.66/kg). Such price level was observed last time in spring 2003 after that the cabbage production in the country increased on 33%.
The tentative forecast of Agricultural Marketing Project shows that the acreage of cabbage production fields will increase on 5% comparing to the previous year. However, it is clear that we'll have to extend this prognosis. The dramatic price growth of the past weeks is likely to result in even more significant extension of cabbage production lands.
