Hot weather may negatively influence the yield of vegetable crops

According to information provided by Sergiy Srokan, the Market Information Specialist of Agricultural Marketing Project, dry and very hot weather has been observed in Cherkasy oblast for the recent 10 days, it negatively influences the growth and vegetation of vegetable crops.

At present moment the insufficient soil moisturizing is recorded on the fields; the capping is formed, delayed growth and vegetation are observed, and also the seedlings planting of late varieties is becoming more complicated. The increase of the pest quantity on vegetable and cucurbits crops is also taking place; such weather conditions are very favorable for their growth and dissemination.

This time it is hard to forecast the consequences of weather influence on yield, but if this weather holds up further, so the negative impact on vegetable crop yield may be significant. The majority of vegetable producers hope that the meteorologists' forecasts concerning temperature decrease and rainfalls are coming true.

The negative influence of these weather conditions may have been minimized through the application of drip irrigation for vegetable production. However, according to the specialists' evaluations, the fields under drip irrigation are rapidly extending in Cherkasy oblast, but still constitute only 1% of the total acreage of the fields under drip irrigation in Ukraine.

AMP information. Cherkasy oblast occupies the second place in Ukraine as regards as gross cucumber production, the third place on gross onion production and vegetable export to the other oblasts.
