Water-melons cheapened - reach harvest is expected

The price on water-melon has already decreased down to USD 0.16-0.2/kg on Farmer market in Kyiv, according to the information provided by Alexander Skrebets, the Price Monitoring Specialist of the Agricultural Marketing Project. The price on water melon is fluctuating within USD 0.08-0.12/kg on Kopani market, Kherson oblast. This price level approximately corresponds to the price level of the previous year.

The forecast, made by the specialists of Agricultural Marketing Project, proves that water-melon production may be expected 15% more comparing to 2004. If the forecast is justified, the prices on water melon in peak season will likely be lower than a year ago. We'll remind that past season the minimal retail prices on this commodity went down to USD 0.06/kg, but they were mainly kept on the level of USD 0.16-0.2/kg.

The trend of water-melon export growth has been observed in the recent years. Past year about 4% of the officially announced yield of water melon was exported by Ukraine. Not only volumes are increasing, but the export geography too - water-melons were exported to 10 countries in 2004.
