Tomatoes of "plum" variety are out of demand in Ukraine

This week the farmers - vegetable producers from the central and southern rayons of Odesa oblast stated to inform more frequently about the difficulties to sell field tomatoes of "plum" variety. This was said earlier by some large producers of the region; the farmers are forced to be amenable while discussing with the potential buyers the price on this commodity.

Most frequently the farmers offered for sale this type of tomato on USD 0.12/kg on terms of self-haul. At the same time, the wholesale price on marketable field tomato is not higher than USD 0.1-0.11/kg on Kopani market, Kherson oblast. Moreover, according to the information coming from Mykolaiv oblast, the local farmers are offering the medium quality tomato on not more than USD 0.08/kg, and high quality product - on maximum USD 0.1/kg. One of the factors of the price decrease is that the grown tomatoes can be stored not more than 2-3 days.

The specialists of the Agricultural Marketing Project point out that tomato of "plum" variety is considered as technical, but is traditionally sold on the Ukrainian fresh produce market. However, the demand on these tomatoes has decreased recently, cause the supply of the modern table varieties with good flavor characteristics is growing, and the lower price on "plum" tomato is not the key factor for the consumers anymore. Still, many producers are not psychologically ready to sell "plum" tomato for processing on USD 0.07-0.1/kg, as the table varieties are usually sold on USD 0.2- 0.3/kg.
