Modern fungicides might have helped to prevent USD 50 mln. losses born by cucumber producers of Ukraine
American agricultural producers gain USD 14.6 of additional profit per each dollar spent on fungicides and their application. It was proved by the large-scale survey financed by CropLife America organization. The studies show that if fungicides are not applied for fruit and vegetable production in the USA, the yield would decrease 50-95%. So, due to the fungicides the US producers grow the additional volume of the produce on the sum of USD 12.8 bln.
At the same time it is mentioned in the survey that despite of more than a hundred years history of the fungicide application in the USA, the scale of application is being reduced constantly, thanks to the efficiency increase and the development of new products. According to the experts' evaluations, up to 95% of grape would never be harvested in the USA if the fungicides were not used during the production period. The assessments for other crops are also impressive: 86% of apple harvest, 62% of water-melons, 54% of peach harvest could also be lost without fungicides.
The fruit and vegetable producers in Ukraine can fully confirm this information. This season pests and diseases caused 50-70% failure of cucumber plantings. Past year the problems with blight caused tomato loss on a large acreage. So, the experts of the Agricultural Marketing Project think that right and efficient application of the modern fungicides in Ukraine might prevent the enormous losses constantly born by fruit and vegetable producers.
According to the latest evaluations of the Agricultural Marketing Project, the losses of the agricultural producers caused by cucumber failure or decrease of this crop yield exceeded USD 50 mln. this year in Ukraine. The details of the modern fungicide application may be inquired from the professionals during the second international conference "Fruits and Vegetables of Ukraine 2005" to be held on December 5th - 7th 2005 in Kyiv.
