Retail prices on late vegetables continue decreasing in Ukraine

Weekly monitoring of retail prices on vegetables in Ukraine is conducted by the Agricultural Marketing Project (AMP); it shows that past week late vegetables cheapened a bit, as their harvesting goes on. At the same time, the prices on potato and carrot remained stable, despite of the finishing harvesting period for these crops. To the opinion of AMP analysts, this price situation is caused by the expected potato and carrot production decrease.

The price on cauliflower decreased most significantly - on 19% in average during a week. The retail price on white cabbage decreased by moderate rates - on 4%. Price on Pekinese cabbage went down too. Past week bulb onion cheapened; the production of this commodity will be 6% more than in 2004, according to the AMP evaluations. Besides, the experts think that newly harvested onion will be of significantly better quality, so that the producers have a chance to avoid much storage losses. The prices on red beets continued decreasing too, as the harvest was rather good.

We are to mention that tomato and cucumber prices started to grow dynamically, as the seasonal production decrease is observed on market. Vegetables supplied on market now are mostly produced in greenhouses; that's why they cost more than field tomatoes and cucumbers. During past week cucumbers grew expensive 13% in average, tomatoes - 27%. Water-melon supply shortened on market, the price on this commodity increased 7% in average.
