Western regions purchase cabbage in Lviv oblast
This year, unlike two previous years, vendors from Ivano-Frankivsk and Zakarpattya oblast make rather large purchases in Lviv oblast for further resale in their regions. October is a season of mass harvesting when local intermediaries are very active. According to the specialists' evaluations, about a half of the produced cabbage is transported now outside the oblast. Cabbage sellers (in majority they are small houseplots of 1-1.5 ha maintained by one family) are trying to sell all the produce right now, as their capacity to store large volumes is lesser the grown harvest. Prices grew more than twice comparing to the previous year: past year cabbage was sold out of the field on USD 0.04-0.05/kg, this year - not less than USD 0.12/kg. The alternative way to sell produce, besides cooperation with the intermediaries, is that some neighbors join efforts and rent a truck to sell cabbage in one of the residential areas in the oblast center. As Sergiy Havryshev says as the Market Information Specialist of Lviv office, Agricultural Marketing Project, the inhabitants of the residential areas got used to such auto trade practice. In this case price will be higher, about USD 0.16/kg, but more efforts are required. Mass selling will take place for two-three weeks more. The sellers suppose that this year the majority of the produced cabbage can be sold faster than a year ago. Those who are able to store cabbage will hurry to do it expecting higher prices before the New Year.
