Apple and pear supply exceeds demand in Ukraine
The results of daily price monitoring on produce wholesale markets in Ukraine prove that table pears and apples are supplied in rather significant volumes, despite of the contracted orchard acreage and respective production decrease, observed in the country. The assortment of apple varieties continues extending. It is worth saying that there are also rather pushy supplies of apples and pears from Moldova on competitive prices.
Increased supply of these products led to comparably moderate apple and pear prices on the background of dramatic price growth on vegetables in Ukraine. At the same time, the demand on pears and apples remains relatively low. Many market operators are waiting for more supplies of high-quality fruits (apples first of all) from abroad, as soon as in December - that time lower seasonal tax on apple import will come into action. This factor seems to influence supply too, as many producers and wholesalers decided not to store large apple volumes this year, fearing for price decrease after the beginning of import supplies.
It is interesting to mention that wholesale prices on apples correspond only approximately now to the price level in Poland. Apples cost today USD 0.49/kg in average on Bronishe market, the largest wholesale produce market in the Eastern Europe. The same apple price was observed today on Kyiv wholesale market. The price on Antonovka and Golden Delicious varieties were the highest, and the price on Gotland and Lobo varieties were recorded as the lowest on Bronishe market.
The perspectives of orchard development in Ukraine will be discussed by the leading Ukrainian and world experts during the second international conference "Fruits and Vegetables of Ukraine 2005" to be held in the National complex Expocenter of Ukraine, in Kyiv, on December 5th-7th, 2005. Please note that the conference will be combined with the international produce exhibition, where you can see by your own eyes all the elements of modern production technologies, post harvest handling, processing, storing and marketing of fruits and vegetables.
