Ukraine ready to fight bird flu off, once it gets onto its territory

Ukrainian authorities are fully prepared to localise the bird flu virus in case of its getting onto the territory of Ukraine and continue to take all the necessary measures to prevent the spread of infection, Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister for Agriculture Yuri Melnyk said to a press-conference Wednesday.

"All the authorities are ready to the emergency measures for localisation of possible manifestations of the disease in Ukraine and prevention of its spread", he said.

He assured, however, that no cases of bird flu disease had been registered in Ukraine until now.

He informed that all the necessary measures were being assumed for cutting the ways of bird flu virus penetration to Ukraine. The strictest control has been introduced in the borderline regions, firstly - in the most likely directions of the virus entry.

The First Deputy State Veterinary Inspector of Ukraine Volodymyr Horzheyev said that the measures assumed by government would allow localising the virus in case of its introduction into the country and stopping it from further spread in the quickest and most efficient manner. Controls have been currently strengthened over entry of freights to Ukraine, the number of laboratory tests of the suspicious materials has been increased and imports of poultry products have been banned from the countries where bird flue cases were registered.
