In Central Ukraine vegetables are stored in significantly less volumes than a year ago

According to the information provided by Sergei Strokan, the Market Information Specialist of Cherkasy office, Agricultural Marketing Project (AMP), significantly less vegetable volumes are stored this season than in previous years in the region. The same information comes from the other central regions of Ukraine.

The main reason for such situation was not the production decrease, but rapidly grown demand on vegetables; besides, the number of specialized premises for long-term vegetable storage is not enough in the region. As a result, the demand on vegetables grew during the harvesting period, and the prices were so favorable that the producers found it reasonable to sell produce at once.

We'll point out that aggregate capacity of vegetable storages in Cherkasy oblast is not enough to provide the region with fruits and vegetables all year round, despite of the grown number of vegetable storages observed this year. That's why many producers continue storing fruits and vegetables in unadapted premises, so that the quality deteriorates and losses increase.

The insufficient vegetable stock in Cherkasy oblast will result in price growth, as market players think. Vegetables are supposed to be supplied from the other regions of Ukraine. You can get more detailed information about price and strategic perspectives of the produce market development in Ukraine, presented by the leading specialists of the country during the second international conference "Fruits and Vegetables of Ukraine 2005" to be held December 5th-7th, 2005 in Kyiv under support of "Agrooglyad: Vegetables and Fruits" journal.
