Ukraine produces nearly the same quantity of white cabbage as EU-15 countries altogether
"Agrooglyad: Vegetables and Fruits" journal has already informed that a top record harvest of cabbage will be gathered this year in Ukraine despite of draught and low yield in some regions of the country. At the same time, according to preliminary estimations cabbage harvest in the EU countries will be almost the lowest of the recent years. This fact let the producers keep the prices on a relatively high level.
In Ukraine, rich for cabbage years often result in price decrease for the level lower than the production cost. The reason is the impossibility to utilize excessive cabbage stocks (cabbage processing is minimal); there are no opportunities and experience of export supplies. So, we think that market players will be interested to know the fact that this year Ukraine has produced around 1.7 mln. tons of cabbage. Ukrainian cabbage harvest is nearly the same as the volume harvested by EU-15 countries altogether. And, Ukraine has produced approximately the same volume as Poland which is the largest cabbage producer in the European Union.
It is worth mentioning that white cabbage is vegetable number one as for production volumes in Ukraine. The same crop occupies only the sixth place among the most popular major vegetables as for production volumes in the EU. Even cauliflowers are harvested 15% more than white cabbage in the EU; Ukraine produces minimal volumes of this commodity. It is worth mentioning that Ukraine occupies the 6th-7th place in the world as for volumes of white cabbage production - we grow nearly the same volumes as the USA does. Russia is the third in this rating; only China and India are ahead of Russia.
You can get more information about the perspectives of white cabbage production, forecasted prices for this commodity and new possible sales channels during the third international conference "Fruits and Vegetables of Ukraine 2006.
