Large shipment of Italian fresh herbs caused price collapse on Kyiv market

A large shipment of high quality fresh herbs of Italian origin has entered Kyiv wholesale market FARMER. This information was provided by Anatoliy Yarovoy, the Price Monitoring Specialist of the "Agrooglyad: Vegetables and Fruits" weekly journal. Mr. Yarovoy said the prices for Italian fresh herbs obviously shocked the market players.

Italian dill is offered for $ 5/kg, leaf parsley - $2/kg, curly parsley for $6/kg. We remind that the ordinary leaf parsley was sold for $8-9/kg past Friday on February the 2nd. The prices for dill reached $12-12.4/kg. Georgian suppliers declared high prices for fresh herbs; today they have been forced to decline the prices for their products. A. Yarovoy said that the shipment of Italian product was relatively large, not less than 18-20 tons of fresh herbs.

It is interesting to mention the following fact. There are the vendors on the wholesale market who trade Georgian fresh herbs. They have started to actively purchase Italian fresh herbs to sell them as Georgian product for higher price after cutting and repacking. They offered the same Italian dill for $7/kg, leaf parsley for $6/kg. To the specialists' opinion, Itlaian fresh herbs have a signficantly better marketing appearance comparing to the Georgian fresh herbs look like.

"Agrooglyad: Vegetables and Fruits" journal has repreatedly pointed out the high prices for fresh herbs on Ukrainian market comparing to the prices for this product in the EU countries. The wholesale price for parsley does not exceed $1-1.1/kg in the neighboring Poland. If the first attempt of fresh herbs import from Italy is successful, Italian produce will be able to fully force Georgian fresh herbs out of Ukrainian market.
