Onion production 2007 in EU increased 5% almost up to top records
The experts estimate onion harvest in EU in 2007 to amount to 4.8 mln. tons, or 5% as greater than in 2006, and only 1% less than the top record harvest of 2005. eBronisze.pl portal provides this information with the reference to Zwiebel-Markinfo.
Onion harvest will reach 4 mln. tons in EU-15. The production increase was the most significant in the main countries-producers of EU. Onion production increased 10%, up to 650,000 tons in Poland in 2007, +11% in Spain and +14% in Netherlands. The source informs onion prices tend to decline in EU.
So, in line with the forecasts of the analysts of "Agrooglyad: Vegetables and Fruits", Russia and CIS countries will be the main exports market for Ukrainian onion this season - Ukraine will mostly compete with Poland and Netherlands there. Ukrainian onion suppliers have a serious advantage over EU suppliers on CIS markets - there are no import tariff rates for Ukrainian products, and, transportation expenses are significantly less.
