Ukraine outraced Poland as for onion production
The analysts of CIS produce business weekly "Agrooglyad: Vegetables and Fruits" inform, Ukraine has been producing more onion during several recent years than Poland, one of the largest European producers and exporters. According to the data of official statistics, in 2006 Ukraine harvested 27% more onion than Poland.
"According to our estimations, the official statistics of onion production in Ukraine in 2006 was extremely underestimated. Actually Ukraine produced not less than 1 mln. tons of onion, but not 751,000 tons, as official statistics informs. At the same time, onion harvest in Poland reached 590,000 tons", Andriy Yarmak says, the head of "Agrooglyad: Vegetables and Fruits".
According to forecasts of "Agrooglyad: Vegetables and Fruits", onion production declined 14% in 2007 in Ukraine. However, the supply of this product is sufficient to satisfy inner market and the increasing demand of Russian market. The large importers from many EU countries started to pay interest to Ukrainian onion, and Russian companies have been actively importing this product already.
