Canada to realise a C$9 mln farm sector technical assistance project in Ukraine
Canada will allocate C$6 million to realise in Ukraine a 5 year technical assistance project in farm sector, the total cost of which will constitute C$9.1 million. Ukrainian embassy in Canada reported that such a decision had been made by the government of this country.
The project "Assistance to Reform and Modernisation in the Sphere of Agriculture" will be financed through the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and will be the largest Canadian technical assistance project in the Ukrainian farm and food processing industry sector. The project coordinator on the Canadian side will be "Saskatchewan Trade and Economic Partnership" (STEP), which has an experience of cooperation with Ukrainian partners in the agrarian field. Also, governments of Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Alberta will be involved in realisation of the initiative and have allocated C$3 million for its financing. The share of STEP will be C$100,000.
CIDA has also announced about launching another technical assistance project in Ukraine: "Quality of Grain, Development of Crediting Systems in Agriculture and Support of Commodity Exchanges", for financing of which there have been allocated C$3.4 million.
Approval of the projects was preceded by CIDA consultations with partner organisations in Ukraine and Canada, which had resulted in the conclusion that the main aims of the initiatives were encouraging of reforms in Ukraine, support of Ukrainian agricultural production, training of Ukrainian farmers and support of farmers' associations, rendering of expert assistance to the Ukrainian specialists.
