Ukraine: potato prices increased by 50% compared to 2009
According to the analysts of Fruit-Inform wholesale potato prices in Ukraine at the end of January 2010 were 50% higher than in the same period of 2009. Higher prices were caused by higher consumptions of potatoes and lower production, which decreased by 3-4% in 2009, according to our estimates. Besides, cold and snowy weather conditions in December – January contributed to the trend.
Potato prices grew most significantly in the eastern and southern regions of the country. Donetsk oblast and Republic of Crimea were the leaders of price increase as they almost depend most on potato supplies from other regions of Ukraine.
