Fruit and vegetable price index from «Fruit-Inform»

Since September 2010, Fruit-Inform announces launching of fruit and vegetable price index to allow monitoring of real complex price change for products of fruit and vegetable categories.

Prices for the most consumable and buyable vegetables and fruits of the certain period of time compose this price index. In September, following 14 categories were included into calculation of the index: potatoes, cabbages, onions, beets, carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers, apples, bananas, watermelons, oranges, tangerines, lemons, and table grapes. In the following, depending on the season, structure of products for calculation of the index will be changing. The index is calculated via determination of price changes within the certain period of time (within a month, a week etc.) corrected by market volume. This accordingly embodies an original “fruit and vegetable basket” of Ukrainian consumers during the certain period of time.

Andrey Yarmak, Head of the project Fruit-Inform, tells: “Fruit and vegetable index of “Fruit-Inform” is designed for showing, how much a Ukrainian consumer has to increase or decrease his expenses for vegetables and fruits during the certain period of time”.

Notwithstanding the index to be calculated on the basis of wholesale prices of producers (importers), it will be enough representative for determination of retail prices dynamics, as correlation of wholesale and retail prices are rather high in fresh fruit and vegetable produce sector.

The index is to be renewed weekly and show dynamics of real price changes within a week and comparatively with the previous year.
