Production technologies for early cabbage were demonstrated in Zakarpattya
Zakarpattya office of the Agricultural Marketing Project (AMP) conducted a Field day on new hybrids, production and marketing technologies for early cabbage on April 26th 2006 in Zarichchya village, Irshava rayon, and Zakarpattya oblast.
Modern, new for the region hybrids of early cabbage from four leading seed companies and production technologies for early vegetable produce were presented at the demosite.
Agricultural producers from Irshava, Mukachevo, Beregovo, Vinogradiv, Uzhgorod rayons of Zakarpattya oblast participated in the event. The representatives of Bejo Zaden, Tezier, Agrimatco, Rijk Zwaan, other companies attended the seminar too; the products of the mentioned companies were introduced at the demosites.
During the seminar the participants had an opportunity to consult with AMP specialists and also with the qualified experts on agricultural marketing (the representatives of Kyiv and Lviv wholesale companies and the Manager of VOPAK supermarket chain), the representatives of the companies-suppliers of seeds, plant protection assets, drip irrigation and other modern agritechnologies.
Greenhouse vegetable production is a very profitable business, but it requires much time, to the opinion of Aleksander Koval, the Marketing Specialist of Zakarpattya AMP office. Seeds are planted before the New Year for the first time, and then producer has to take care of the transplants day by day. Labor and heating costs make the greatest share of the expenses needed for super-early cabbage production. For example, the producers of Irshava rayon villages normally manage the standard professional greenhouse of 10 hundred square meters (which costs about 50,000 UAH). If the circumstances are favorable, they can harvest up to 4 tons of cabbage. Taking into account the daily changing wholesale prices, it is important to sell produce as quickly as possible on the markets of Kyiv or other large consumer centers, which prices are the highest. As of 22nd of April, the wholesale price for early cabbage was $2.5/kg and as of 28th of April it declined down to $1.7/kg. After early cabbage each producer will plant another crop: pepper, cucumber, tomato. The returns are guaranteed; as a rule, they overbalance the expenses during one year.
