Cabbage prices go on increasing in Ukraine

The specialists of "Agrooglyad: Vegetables and Fruits" journal inform that the prices for white cabbage of 2006 harvest continue growing as a result of the seasonal reduction of cabbage supplies on markets of almost all regions of Ukraine. The buyers of the wholesale shipments mention the shortage of quality cabbage supplies; so they increase the purchase prices up to $0.34-0.36/kg. However, they are told to sometimes fail finding the needed volume even for such a price.

As of today, the wholesale prices for cabbage have already exceeded the level of $0.4/kg; in some cases the price for the supplied past-year cabbage reaches $0.48-0.5/kg. To the specialists' opinion, large vegetable storages primarily initiate the positive price dynamics; their storage technology let keep cabbage till mid summer without any serious quality losses.

The owners of vegetable storages mostly implement the restrained trade policy hoping for the more intensive price growth on market.

Nevertheless, it is possible that the demand for the past-year harvested cabbage will start decreasing mid May in line with the market saturation with the supplies of early cabbage and other vegetables of 2007 harvest.

At the present moment the market players observe the steadily increasing supplies of early cabbage; the sales volumes are growing too also due to the resellers who gradually decrease the price for this product.
