The Smaller Size of Dessert Apple is the Unproductive Direction for Europe
According to portal information FreshPlaza.com with reference to the World Apple& Pear Association (WAPA), decrease in marketable dessert apple average size to international standard existing in EU may influence negatively the reputation of apples in Europe. The research made by the Association experts in several European countries has shown that consumers consider apples of smaller size less qualitative. Besides, a smaller apple, indeed, has less content of sugar and, accordingly, seems to be less tasty for most consumers.
Despite the fact that in Asia, demand for small apple is higher than for large one, WAPA thinks that the large apple is preferable for Europe and warns the European Commission to refrain from accepting international standards regarding apples. However, non-acceptance of these norms may result in further discussion of this issue in WTO. Up to now, only Holland agreed to accept these standards under condition that the smaller apple would meet the requirements of its ripeness.
In Ukraine, according to estimates of CIS fruit and vegetable business weekly experts "Agrooglyad: Vegetables and Fruits" consumer preferences as to apple quality and size as a whole correspond to European ones. A big apple is considered more qualitative, however, as prices for them are considerably higher than for small ones, the lion's share of consumption belongs to apples of average and small size. It should be also noted that a Ukrainian consumer is traditionally much more tolerant to an apple damaged partly by diseases or plant pests than a EU consumer, because the former considers this apple more ecologically safe.
Note that great attention to situations analysis at the apple market, also to investments in apple orchards in Ukraine and Russia prospects will be paid during the following international conferences: "Fruit& Vegetable Business of Russia.
