Russians will soon forget the flavor of traditional Russian fruits
According to estimations done by Andriy Yarmak, the Head of fruit&vegetable business project "Agrooglyad: Vegetables and Fruits", the share of nationally produced fruits and berries will decline down to 20% in 2007 on Russian fruit market. In other words, to the expert's opinion, only each fifth fruit, consumed by Russians, is grown in Russia. Moreover, the share of national fruits is even smaller on the markets of Saint-Petersburg and Moscow. This information was presented during the second international conference for fruit&vegetable business professionals "Fruit&Vegetable Business of Russia 2007. Wealth of New Opportunities" in the presentation "Current overview and future development of fresh produce business in Russia".
According to the forecasts done by A. Yarmak, the growth of fruit imports to Russian Federation will exceed the increase of inner production volumes for at least five years. The share of the consumed traditional Russian fruits may decline down to 10%. At the same time, both large investors (oil and oil&gas companies, agri-holdings, fruit importers, others), and relatively small farms are interested now in fruit growing. Russia possesses quite a lot of fruit projects implemented on 1,000 ha and more - this is a unique case for most countries.
